TL;DR

  • Bluetooth Core 7.0 adds optional HDT, raising LE bit rate from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps.
  • First devices expected in early 2027, starting with wireless audio upgrades.
  • Smartwatches, spatial gear and AI gadgets gain faster syncs and better battery life.

Bluetooth is about to move a lot faster. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has added High Data Throughput, or HDT, as an optional part of the new Bluetooth Core 7.0 standard.

The change lifts the maximum bit rate on Bluetooth LE from 2 Mbps to 7.5 Mbps. That is nearly four times quicker, so devices can move more data in less time.

First gadgets using the upgrade are expected in early 2027. Wireless audio gets the biggest lift right away, with support for higher-resolution tracks plus spatial and multi-channel sound without any special codecs.

Other devices benefit too. Smartwatches can sync health and fitness data quicker, which means the radio stays on for shorter periods and battery life improves. Firmware updates on watches and smart-home gear should also feel snappier.

Spatial computing gear and personal AI gadgets can hand off bigger chunks of data without needing Wi-Fi. The whole connection stays more reliable because it finishes the job faster.

The Tea

Bluetooth keeps quietly eating more jobs that used to need Wi-Fi or cables. When the first HDT headphones and watches hit shelves, most people will just notice smoother audio and fewer low-battery warnings. The real win is that a standard everyone already uses just got room to grow.
